KESZLER GALLERY – SOUTHAMPTON, N. Y.

Today, I visited this empty, spacious gallery. These photos are huge, especially the super-giant, (about 12 feet by 8 feet), photo collages of Marilyn and now, new American icon, Elizabeth. The technique of assembling hundreds, or even thousands, of tiny photos of a person, creating one, recognizable face, in a collage,  is not new. Some cheap, automated software programs do it, though this artist may have done it manually. Other photos, such as “Cassius Clay”,  are simply “found photos”, possibly even newspaper photos, blown up, with dust intact. I found all this work to be shallow and commercial. The price list was a secret, but I am sure they are quite expensive. These images are so Hamptons-esque, and certainly not heading for the Whitney anytime soon. Sex and celebrity still sell.

The ambience was lovely, the refreshments were great, Bob looked terrific, and his 26 small works were very whimsical, clever, and “tres amuse”, sure to sell quickly.

"LUNAR LANDSCAPE"

This photo is a 50 inch by 8 inch still life/panorama shot on a glass table, which created those cool reflections. The subject was many cracked, washed, dried, jumbo eggshells set out in a straight line. The idea was to create a kind of moon surface, a lunar landscape. This photo sold first at Guild Hall in July 2010, and was just 1 of 5 images sold out of 327! It also won a prize in the Image 10 contest last summer run by the A.S.M.P. (Association of Media Professionals), and exhibited in N.Y.C.

WATER MILL MUSEUM GALLERY

I attended my own opening at the Water Mill Museum Gallery, in Water Mill, New York. The exhibition is being held in the historic, well-preserved, water mill, built in 1644. It is a beautiful location. It is the annual members’ art show, and we were all allowed to have  just one piece in the show. Here is my impressionistic photo, 16″ by 20″ of the pond behind my home an next to it is another version of the same lovely  pond and view, which I could not also exhibit at the same time.

“BORDER CROSSING”

I just viewed this is a very sad, and compelling film on DVD: a depressing, horrifying look at the struggle of the very poor to reach America. Thousands of Central Americans must dangerous traverse, risking their lives daily,  more than 4,000 miles of Mexico, to try to have a better life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Nadie

“DEATH OF A CYCLIST”

Also, this weekend, we viewed on DVD, “Death of a Cyclist“, directed by Juan Antonio Bardem, 1955, 87 minutes, black and white, Spain. The film was excellent except that it was too long, even at just 87 minutes! It ought to have been edited better. No need to “beat a dead horse”. We get the point, without having such long scenes in some cases. Still, it won the Critics’ Prize at the 1955 Cannes Film FestivalSYNOPSIS: Upper-class geometry professor Juan and his wealthy, married mistress, Maria José, driving back from a late-night rendezvous, accidentally hit a bicyclist, and run. The resulting, exquisitely shot tale of guilt, infidelity, and blackmail reveals the wide gap between the rich and the poor in Spain, and surveys the corrupt ethics of a society seduced by decadence. Director Juan Antonio Bardem’s charged melodrama Death of a Cyclist, (Muerte de un ciclista), was a direct attack on 1950’s Spanish society under Franco’s rule. Though it was affected by the dictates of censorship, its sting could never be dulled.
